Software development and support costs a company money and quite frankly a price tag of $50 is pretty good to get software that I liked using that is going to be supported and developed into the future.
NIK COLLECTION BY DXO 2018 FREE
The Nik Collection has only been free for around two years and during that time it was not developed or supported. It started around $500 and was that way for years until Google dropped the price to $150. Well, you have to remember, the Nik Collection was not always free. The two big points were "Why should I have to pay $50" and "Why should I pay when nothing changed"
NIK COLLECTION BY DXO 2018 MAC OS X
When the DXO Nik Collection was released, DXO put on their website the four things they had changed.ġ) Fully supports the latest versions of Photoshop, Lightroom, and Photoshop ElementsĢ) Fully supports the latest Mac OS X Operating SystemĤ) Auto Update engine now integrated into the software.Īll four of those things were very interesting to me because not only had Adobe made a lot of changes to their software but OS X is on High Sierra and there was a lot of complaints about the free version of the Nik Collection not working on High Sierra. This was a major complaint from a lot of photographers. I really liked the software and what it could do, but there was a problem. As Adobe continued advancing the development of Photoshop and Lightroom, the Nik Collection became more unstable and unusable and eventually didn't work at all on my computer. In 2016, when Google made the Nik Collection free, I downloaded it and started incorporating parts of it into my work flow. I got an email that the "new" DXO Nik Collection was available for purchase and this is where the "controversy" started. In October of 2018 DXO announced they would be purchasing the Nik Collection which brings us to June 6th, 2018.

Personally I think Google stopped developing and supporting the Nik Collection well before they announced it in 2017. In March 2016 Google made the decision that they were no longer going to charge for the Nik Collection and in May 2017 Google announced it would no longer be supported or developed. In 2012 Google bought the Nik Collection and started charging $150 for the collection. Luckily I still have the free version which I can reinstall if my paid version fails to work due to some licence lookup failure.First off a little history, the Nik Collection has been around for a very long time and originally it sold for $500. I'm back to running it via Lightroom which is not my ideal workflow but I'll deal with it. So for those who have the free version and were thinking of upgrading for better seamless integration with PS.

(polite but obviously ticked)ĭay or two later, get an email from Paypal saying DXO has granted full refund. Paypal was awaiting their response (for 20 days before doing anything)Ĭouple of days pass and I get a "How was your customer experience with the DXO helpdesk automated email.Īnswered how I had zero help from them. (Sounds promising) Since I had opened the Paypal complaint process there was nothing they could do. with the launch of Nik their help desk was overloaded. (Well there was the automated "we have received your ticket and someone will be looking into it") Sent Paypal a complaint asking for a refundĤ-5 days later I get an email fro DXO saying they apologize for the delay. I know it was not user error)Ģ days went by and not even a single response. (I've been in IT for 30 years and have rebuilt countless PCs and Macs. If they "Fixed" the issues with working alongside PS, there must have been other issues. Rebooted reinstalled tried a variety of things.

Uninstalled my old, installed new one ran it from PS and it crashed PS pretty much the same way it did before. Update: So on the 7th or so I ordered the NEW Nik collection update.
